Key Essential Functions and Accountabilities of the Job

  • Organizes, directs, and administers the Nursing/Patient Care Services to provide the level of care required by current medical and nursing standards.

    • Establishes and directs the nursing model

    • Reviews and evaluates administrative and clinical nursing procedures within MEMC, and initiates change as needed.

    • Represents assigned areas to other hospital divisions, clinics, other county departments, and external agencies to coordinate activities, identify issues, resolve problems, and share information.

  • Promotes a strategic plan for nursing that reflects the organizations current and anticipated strategic priorities.

    • Assures the integration of findings of current evidenced-based practice and research into the policies and procedures governing the provision of nursing care.

    • Develops and implements mechanisms for promoting the clinical, educational, and leadership development of patient care staff members.

    • Confers with other Consortium management and supervisory personnel to discuss management and patient care issues.

    • Collaborates with MEMC hospital administrative and medical staff regarding nursing program needs and administrative matters.

    • Provides guidance on consortium policies and procedures (P and P) involving nursing scope of practice while serving as a leader for specific P and P related directly to nursing within MEMC.

  • Provides ongoing effective Nursing leadership to Mount Edgecumbe Medical Center nursing staff.

    • Oversees development and implementation of the staffing plan for Nursing Services.

    • Coordinates with nursing management staff to ensure appropriate nurse staffing and clinical care per regulatory and hospital practices.

    • Directs personnel management activities of assigned areas.

    • Guides subordinate directors, managers, and supervisors in the selection, hiring, training, and development of staff as well as performance appraisal, documentation of deficiencies, performance recognition, and disciplinary action.

    • Works with HR and legal staff as appropriate.

  • Directs and participates in the preparation and administration of Nursing Services, budgets, and capital overlay requests

    • Evaluates staffing, equipment, and supply needs.

    • Prepares justifications and cost benefit analyses.

    • Reviews and recommends approval of expenditures.

    • Oversees procurement of supplies and equipment for assigned areas.

    • Collaborates with revenue cycle department on areas of service growth and opportunities.

    • Actively evaluates current revenue generating services for lost and/or missed charges and compliance-related matters.

  • Maintains compliance with regulations governing healthcare providers and regulations of accrediting bodies by monitoring operations and initiating changes where required.

    • Directs preparation and maintenance of nursing records, reports, and statistics in accordance with administrative and nursing policies in support of regulatory governance and audits.

    • Prepares or reviews special studies, reports, and documents

    • Reviews and ensures proper completion of reports, records, and other documents.

    • Maintains performance improvement activities related to nursing and patient care and participates in CQI activities.

    • Establishes relationship between electronic medical record (EHR) and current nursing practice.

    • Serves as consultant to the nursing informatics team at MEMC to ensure compliance as it relates to the EHR.
