Successfully performs work as an individual, as a member of a single craft, or multi-craft work crew. Complies with craft and shipyard safety and environmental measures. Properly cares for and safely uses hand and power tools and all company property. According to manufacturers' specifications, disassembles and inspects for wear, damage and possible malfunction of ships mechanical equipment aboard vessel and in shop, including but not limited to gas, diesel, and steam engines, electrical motors and accessories including valving, pneumatic, and hydraulic equipment. Opens and inspects/repair rudders and shafting which includes bearings and surfaces. Under supervision, removes and installs ship's propellers and shafts, using air and electrical chainfalls and various other equipment. Repairs and inspects pumps and mechanical seals. Repairs and inspects rudder, wheel, and shafting. Performs basic winch and windless repairs -- steam and hydraulic. Basic repair of evaporators. Tubing assembly and testing of condensers and heat exchanger. Diesel engine theory and repairs. Works from ship specifications, work orders, and applicable working drawings and blueprints. ESSENTIAL SECONDARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Incumbent performs similar work in all areas of the Yard as the need arises. KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES Communicates effectively, works independently or in a group. Ability to do basic math, i.e. add, subtract, divide and multiply. Ability to read, write, speak, and comprehend English. Ability to do percentages, metric and decimal conversions, multiply fractions and decimals as required for use in measurements,. Propulsion basics including variable pitch props. Pumps - types and mechanical seals. Steam systems. Underwater hull machinery, including bearings. Blowers, winches, hydraulic and pneumatic equipment. Shipboard systems including condensers, heat exchangers, fuel and lube oil, and cooling. EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE: High school or GED or equivalent combination of 2-5 years of education and directly applicable work and/or proven skills in the trade. Associate 2 Proficient in both Fire Watch and Associate 1 job duties. Trains and assists with erecting and dismantling staging. Assists with and/or performs basic pipe bolting under the direction of a Journey Level employee or Supervisor. May perform Associate 1 or Fire Watch duties. Must acquire three (3) additional Ship Repair Skills to progress to the next level. Associate 3 Proficient in Fire Watch, Associate 1 and Associate 2 job duties. Trains and assists with rigging under the direction of a Journey Level employee or Supervisor. Assists with and/or performs mechanical bolting under the direction of a Journey Level employee or Supervisor. May perform Fire Watch, Associate 1 or Associate 2 duties. Must acquire three (3) additional Ship Repair Skills to progress to the next level. CERTIFICATES, LICENSES AND REGISTRATIONS Four-hour fire watch certification, must be obtained within 30 days of hire.
