    Upon hire, this position requires a valid Class E driver license with an acceptable driving record in accordance with the Department's Drivers Record Requirements Policy. A CDL Class B License Instructional Permit is required within 60 days of appointment to the position and candidate must obtain a CDL Class B license with air brakes within 10 months of appointment.

    An unacceptable driving record is defined as any of the following:

  • three (3) or more moving violations in the past 3 years that accumulate 3 or more points per violation;

  • any 2 convictions of reckless driving in the past 3 years;

  • a suspension or revocation of the driver license for moving violations in the past 3 years; and

  • a suspension or revocation for refusal to take a sobriety test, or any suspension or revocation for a DUI conviction in the past 4 years

    POSITION DESCRIPTION: Performs welding in the maintenance, repair, and replacement of various highway structures and facilities, including overhead signs, structures, guardrails, handrails, elements of drainage structures, and other elements related to highway structures and facilities.

    Preheats, cleans, cuts, fits, and welds metal components in the manufacturing and repair of structures, fleet equipment, buildings and other department owned and operated assets.

    Operates and maintains a wide variety of mechanized equipment such as automotive, pickups, and vans as required and related to the maintenance and repair of highway structures and facilities, while following safety procedures.

    Prepares surfaces and applies protective coatings to manufactured or repaired metal products. Operates met cutting saws, metalizing gun, hydraulic punch, plasma cutter, drill press, all types of welding equipment and other associated tools.

    Selects materials, supplies, and equipment necessary for required work and prepares requisitions and price quotes for purchases according to purchasing guidelines. Purchases parts and supplies as a purchasing card holder and is accountable for proper processing of invoices and completion of required paperwork and work orders.

    Unloads raw materials and loads completed products utilizing forklifts and other associated tools.

    KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: KNOWLEDGE OF PRINCIPLES, TECHNIQUES, EQUIPMENT, AND MATERIALS OF THE WELDING TRADE. KNOWLEDGE OF PRINCIPLES AND TECHNIQUES USED IN GAS AND ELECTRIC WELDING AND EQUIPMENT MAINTENANCE AND REPAIR. ABILITY TO PERFORM FLAT, VERTICAL, AND HORIZONTAL WELDING. ABILITY TO PERFORM OXYGEN, ACETYLENE, AND ELECTRICAL WELDING RELATED TO AUTOMOTIVE AND EQUIPMENT REPAIRS. ABILITY TO TAKE ACCURATE MEASUREMENTS. ABILITY TO ESTABLISH AND MAINTAIN EFFECTIVE WORKING RELATIONSHIPS WITH OTHERS. ABILITY TO LIFT 50 LBS, CLIMB, SQUAT, STOOP, PUSH, PULL, CRAWL AND BEND. ABILITY TO USE APPROPRIATE SAFETY EQUIPMENT. ABILITY TO WORK INDEPENDENTLY. SKILLED IN THE USE OF BASIC MATH. SKILLED IN DOCUMENTING WORK PERFORMED AND MATERIALS USED ON WORK ORDERS. ABILITY TO FOLLOW ORAL AND WRITTEN INSTRUCTIONS. ABILITY TO COMMUNICATE EFFECTIVELY VERBALLY AND IN WRITING.

    OTHER JOB RELATED REQUIREMENTS: Due to the nature of this position, the incumbent must respond to emergencies. The incumbent of this position is required to work with or around Department of Corrections inmates. Must obtain certification in Temporary Traffic Control (Maintenance of Traffic) - Intermediate Level within one year and maintain it. Incumbent must be able to wear and use a respirator. A CDL Class B License Instructional Permit is required within 60 days of appointment to the position and candidate must obtain a CDL Class B license with air brakes within 10 months of appointment.

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: High School Diploma or Certificate of High School Equivalency and one (1) year experience as a welder or graduate from an accredited welding program. An additional year of experience as a welder is a substitute for a High School Diploma or Certificate of High School Equivalency.

    As a CANDIDATE, you may be required to provide documentation (i.e. HIGH SCHOOL DIPLOMA OR EQUIVALENCY, college transcripts, ETC.) to verify meeting these Minimum Qualifications.

    A Competitive Area Differential (CAD) additive in the amount of $1,976.00 salary.
