This role is with Starship, a division of Optum Financial focused on making benefits better through human-centered design and product innovation. We’re looking for a Product Design Director with a high-quality design execution to be both hands-on in the work and leading design work on cross-functional squad(s) to ensure design is meeting business objectives. The right person for this role has an eye for detail and an obsession with craft. They are motivated to ship quality consumer-focused products and can lead teams through ambiguity while balancing ambition and pragmatism. Additionally, they are agile and resilient and have worked in a range of settings from start-ups to larger corporate settings.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Lead through craft and move seamlessly between designing and leading

  • Inform and strategic decision-making in collaboration with product and engineering peers

  • Frame and solve hard problems to propose innovative and viable solutions

  • Provide creative leadership and for your team to do their best work

  • People management with a focus on supporting growth and removing obstacles

  • Establish processes on squads and within the greater design team to ensure quality outcomes

  • Champion and support cross-team collaboration, processes, and cultivate team growth

  • Be a pillar for quality design, staying in the know of the latest design trends and developments in order to champion new and innovative ideas

  • Support and enhance the development of our design system in Figma and the translation into Storybook

  • Collaborating on product roadmaps

  • Present work and facilitating workshops with executives

  • Partner with the research team to drive empathy and understanding and inform product enhancements and features

Required Qualifications:

  • 8+ years of professional design experience

  • 3+ years of management and leadership experience

  • 3+ years of experience leading and executing on design systems work

  • 1+ years of experience working within accessibility guidelines and developing processes to support it

  • 1+ years of experience in working within or for large organizations

  • 2+ cases outlining how their design leadership has met business objectives

  • 2+ cases showing high visual acuity shown in consumer focused product case-studies

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience working in banking or a financial institution

  • Understanding of healthcare and insurance

  • Experience in brand design

California, Colorado, Connecticut, Hawaii, Nevada, New Jersey, New York, Rhode Island, or Washington Residents Only: The salary range for this role is $104,700 to $190,400 annually. Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to local labor markets, education, work experience, certifications, etc. UnitedHealth Group complies with all minimum wage laws as applicable. In addition to your salary, UnitedHealth Group offers benefits such as, a comprehensive benefits package, incentive and recognition programs, equity stock purchase and 401k contribution (all benefits are subject to eligibility requirements).
