Posting Summary
Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking a Lab Technician for the Waksman Institute of Microbiology. Under the immediate guidance and direction of a senior technician or other supervisor, provides routine technical support relative to scientific research work or projects of a laboratory and/or teaching program.Among the key duties of this position are the following:
  • Performs scientific procedures in support of lab research, such as transfection, western blotting, animal dissection, immunostaining, and imaging.
  • Performs technical tasks in support of lab research, such as making solutions, autoclaving glassware, and maintaining insect and/or bacterial and tissue cultures for experimental purposes.
  • Performs administrative tasks in support of lab research, such as ordering, inventory, maintaining databases and acting as a point of contact for administrative issues.
  • Collects and completes basic preparation of samples and specimens.
  • Performs standard and repetitive physical, chemical, and biological tests on materials, substances, and/or living subjects.
  • Conducts fundamental biomedical research investigating molecular mechanisms of growth and morphogenesis.
  • Prepares media, substances, solutions, and reagents.
  • Performs related duties as required.

Qualifications

Minimum Education and Experience
Requires a high school/vocational school education or equivalent with coursework completed in the relevant science area(s) and one year of research study experience. An equivalent amount of college-level study in an appropriate science curriculum may be substituted for the experience. Requires a practical understanding and a working knowledge of basic scientific techniques, and the ability to lift and move up to 30 pounds. Requires the ability to record and maintain data in computerized and non-computerized formats. Must be able to communicate effectively. Will be required to participate in required occupational health and safety programs. May require a valid driver?s license, two years driving experience, and successful completion of the Rutgers? Defensive Driving Course. Regular workweek may include evening and/or weekend work.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience working in a research laboratory.
  • Knowledge or experience with fundamental techniques in molecular biology, protein biochemistry, cell culture, or imaging.
  • Bachelor's degree in biology, chemistry, or related fields.
Equipment Utilized
  • LiCor Odyssey imager, microscopes.
Physical Demands and Work Environment
  • Occasionally lifts and/or carries objects weighing up to 30 pounds.
  • Occasionally stoops and bends.
  • Occasionally reaches and grasps with arms and hands.
  • Work involves possible exposure to malodorous vapors, low dose radiation, contamination by toxic chemicals and acids and presence of carcinogenic substances.
  • Work involves exposure to microbial organisms (BSL 1 only), Drosophila melanogaster (fruit flies), and tissue culture cell lines.
  • Long periods of standing and/or sitting.
