The Idaho State Department of Agriculture is currently recruiting for a Veterinarian Medical Officer, Senior in the Animal Industries Division,located in the Magic Valley, or in Eastern Idaho, depending on the successful candidate.

The Veterinarian Medical Officer, Senior serves as the state expert and program coordinator in a specialized area of veterinary medicine. Incumbent is responsible for the evaluation and improvement of programs and operational activities designed to prevent or eliminate threats to Idaho agriculture from emerging or newly introduced diseases of domestic or wildlife animals. At this level, the incumbent will use principles, concepts, scientific methodology and techniques in the field of veterinary medicine to apply theories and proposals to problems and issues which are not susceptible to resolution by established methods.

Example of Duties

• Develop or modify and implement animal health and disease control programs.

• Develop and implement a Secure Food Supply program for Idaho's livestock industries

•Manage programs including the following: Brucellosis, Tuberculosis, animal health and disease control, deleterious exotic animal permits, commercial aquaculture, investigation and enforcement of disease related issues

• Direct the investigation of disease outbreaks.

• Conduct epidemiological investigations and assist in animal care investigations, as needed.

• Carry out the responsibilities of an employee as outlined in the department's Risk Manage/Safety Policy.

Minimum Qualifications

These qualifications are mandatory requirements:

Current or temporary Idaho Veterinary License or have passed the National Board Exam and the Clinical Competency Test (CCT), or the North American Veterinary Licensing Examination (NAVLE) and are eligible for a temporary Idaho Veterinary license. Considerable knowledge of diseases of domestic and other animals and diagnostic procedures. Experience detecting and diagnosing animal diseases

Experience developing disease control strategies.

Supplemental Information

Desirable Areas: These qualifications are not required; however, if you have the related background it may increase your score.

Background in large animal medicine, epidemiology and livestock production. Background in and comfort with livestock field necropsy or post-mortem examinations.

Temporary appointments from this announcement, serving at least one thousand forty (1,040) hours of continuous service, may be hired as an entrance probationary employee without further examination for the same classification and location as announced.
