This position performs field and office engineering for the maintenance and construction operations that are overseen by the Maintenance Operations Support Team Unit. The Maintenance Operations Support Team is responsible for various purchase order contracts, division managed contracts, and secondary construction projects within the Division. In addition, the Maintenance Operations Support Team oversees and assists the county maintenance operations with the Division. This position will support Higher Level Technicians in areas such as planning, design, estimation, evaluation, investigation, inspection, surveying, materials sampling, testing, and reporting.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies

  • Basic knowledge in conducting routine inspections for compliance with contract agreements, standards/codes, and specifications

  • Working knowledge and skill in the use of computer equipment, software, and mathematical functions

  • Working knowledge and understanding of NCDOT concepts, practices, and theories used within the MOST Unit

  • Working knowledge of Basic Work Zone Safety and NCDOT Workplace Safety Policy and Practices

  • Experience maintaining/completing standard records, reports, and correspondence

Additional Expectations:

The employee will need knowledge and understanding of general concepts, practices, and theories used in construction inspection and surveying. General knowledge of mathematics and the ability to use a calculator to perform basic calculations will be needed. The ability to establish and maintain positive lines of communication between other technicians, engineers, contractors, and the public will be needed. The employee will serve as survey crew member and assist with project stakeout. The employee will be expected to effectively communicate in a clear, concise, organized, and persuasive manner. The employee will be expected to work safely in an outside environment with exposure to hazards on construction sites including heights, highway traffic, and traversing rough terrain in evaluating highway construction. The employee will be expected to perform moderate physical activity including but not limited to walking, climbing, balancing, kneeling, and standing. Employee must be able to lift 50 lbs. Employee will be expected to work nights and weekends as needed to any assigned project within the Division. The employee will be expected to apply safety philosophy and program to all operations. The ability to safely operate a motor vehicle is needed. Safety toe shoes are needed.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Associate degree in an applicable area of Engineering Technology, Survey Technology or a related curriculum from an appropriately accredited institution and two (2) years of progressive technician level experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
