Sutter Health Operating Room Technician in Castro Valley, California

Position Overview:

Plans and organizes the scrub and preparation aspects in the care of surgical patients. Collaborates with the RNs, surgeons and all healthcare team members. Maintains AORN standards of professional nursing practice.

Job Description :

  • Assists the surgical team during operative procedures when needed

  • Assists with trauma team/service and turnovers, lunch and break reliefs

  • Prepares the OR with appropriate instruments, sutures, supplies, and equipment necessary

  • Maintains OR equipment and instruments to ensure equipment is in safe working order

  • Maintains supplies in OR

  • Clears away and cleans used instruments after a procedure according to hospital policy. Discards any contaminated supplies according to written policy. Controls the location of contaminated instruments and supplies to prevent spread of infection

  • Assists with room turnover, including takedown of instruments, moving/re-moving equipment and room cleaning when needed

  • Follows aseptic technique when opening sterile supplies and setting up for procedures.

  • Drapes table, keeps operative field clean, neat, dry and sterile

  • Assists in draping patients, assists surgeons in gowning and gloving., Assists with prepping operative sites. Assists with positioning and restraining of patients for surgery

  • Assists in the application of sterile dressings

  • Maintains orderly and sterile instrument table and/or Mayo stand, arranges instruments according to established procedures

  • Maintains and monitors all supplies for specialty carts

  • Maintenance of surgical inventory and preparation of case carts

  • Identifies and immediately reports any breaks in aseptic techniques by self or others

  • Plays an active role in the “Time Out” and “Preincisional Pause” according to hospital policy

  • Maintains correct sponge count, needles and instrument counts according to hospital policy

  • Identifies and immediately reports incorrect sponge, needle and/or instrument counts or any other concerns regarding the case.

  • Assists in the transfer of patients from the OR table to gurney or bed, assists with proper positioning of patients to assure proper body alignment

  • Transports patient as assigned by foot, wheelchair, gurney to another department

  • Checks for proper patient identification before proceeding with any intervention or procedure

  • Coordinates all immediate use sterilization needs for OR and SPD

  • Coordinates with SPD regarding instruments for “to follow” cases.

  • Coordinates with Lead Surgical Tech for OR instrument needs and ordering

  • Reports patient needs and changes to the RN

  • Performs other related duties as assigned or requested

  • Attends meetings as required

EDUCATION

  • Equivalent experience will be accepted in lieu of the required degree or diploma.

  • HS Diploma or equivalent education/experience

CERTIFICATION & LICENSURE

  • BLS-Basic Life Support Healthcare Provider

  • CST-Certified Surgical Technologist

PREFERRED EXPERIENCE AS TYPICALLY ACQUIRED IN:

  • Surgical Technician training

  • Minimum five years experience in Surgical Services preferred

  • Experience in basic computer skills preferred

SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE

  • Knowledge of Aseptic technique

  • Surgical scrub procedures, use of sterile technique, instruments, and setup procedures for the delivery/OR room

  • Knowledge of the anesthesia cart and equipment

  • OSHA Risk Category I(High Risk)

  • Assist with tilling, supporting, maneuvering, and adjusting the position of patients weighing over 200 pounds

Pay Range is $44.77 to $57.81 / hour

The salary range for this role may vary above or below the posted range as determined by location. This range has not been adjusted for any specific geographic differential applicable by area where the position may be filled. Compensation takes into account several factors including but not limited to a candidate’s experience, education, skills, licensure and certifications, department equity, training and organizational needs.
