Position Purpose

Looking for a lower-stress nursing job in Wisconsin? We're hiring a Psychiatric Registered Nurse to work Monday-Friday, 8 AM - 5 PM with limited on-call crisis rotation but you will need schedule flexibility. You'll train with other nurses upon hire and you would focus on mental health as this position is with the Outagamie County Mental Health Division. This position does have little direct clinical with patients. As a Psychiatric Nurse, you'll administer medication, evaluate client status and needs, and collaborate with other agencies to manage symptoms. Reporting to the Supervisor, Mental Health Services, the Psychiatric Nurse performs various duties regarding the nursing needs of clients under psychiatric care; administers medication, evaluates client status and needs, etc.

Location: County Administration Building at 320 S Walnut St in Appleton, WI

Hours are: Monday-Friday 8 AM to 5 PM. Limited On-call crisis rotation with flexibility in schedule required.

This position is available for Comp Time.

Key Responsibilities

The following duties are most critical for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.

  • Complete and record vitals for telehealth and in-house psychiatric appointments as needed.

  • Assist with the monitoring of medication consents.

  • Assist psychiatric providers as needed throughout the client’s appointment.

  • Assist clients with scheduling of psychiatric appointment.

  • Obtains information from clients, family members or others when needed.

  • Collaborate with other agencies to address nursing or medication management concerns and symptom management.

  • Provides ongoing symptom assessment and mental status exams if needed at each client contact.

  • Orders refills of medications at pharmacies under the direction of a psychiatrist and maintains records for medication fee waivers.

  • Organizes and administers injection clinics and/or administers and observes effects of medications for all clients under the direction of a psychiatrist and maintains on-going physician orders.

  • Provides individuals and family members with information regarding services which best meet their needs and desires; communicates medical changes and related issues to appropriate parties.

  • Provides educational presentations to the public when deemed needed.

  • Preforms on-call services as assigned.

  • Attends Unit and other meetings as required.

  • Maintains clinical files and accurate records, as appropriate, and prepares reports as required for coordination of the case and by State and Medical Assistance guidelines.

  • Maintains nursing licensure and stays abreast of professional, ethical and legal issues within the defined field.

  • Maintains regular and predictable attendance.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Education/Certifications/Experience Requirements

  • Current licensure as a Registered Nurse in the State of Wisconsin required.

  • Bachelor's degree in Nursing required.

  • Two years’ experience working with the target population preferred but not required.

Required or Preferred Skills

  • Ability to operate nursing equipment including syringes, medical equipment including manual and automatic blood pressure instruments, etc.

  • Ability to operate a variety of office equipment including personal computer, dictaphone, photocopier, calculator, and telephone.

  • Ability to operate a motor vehicle or have transportation accommodations available for work related activities (as needed for Crisis on-call work responsibilities).

  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, divide, calculate decimals and percent’s, and make use of the principles of descriptive statistics.

  • Knowledge of and demonstrated ability to conform to goals, policies, and procedures of the Department as well as the Outagamie County Work Rules and Terms of Employment.

  • Knowledge of local community resources.

  • Ability to comprehend and interpret a variety of documents including client charts, medical forms, medication error reports, and other lab reports; psychological evaluations and other assessment reports, school records, professional literature, policy and procedure manuals, diagnostic manuals, physician orders, hospital charts, etc.

  • Ability to accurately read prescriptions and prepare psychotropic medication for the injection clinic to be given at the right dose, frequency and location on the body.

  • Ability to prepare a variety of documents including client records, referrals, court records, intake and assessment records, case notes, letters and other correspondence, etc.

  • Ability to use and interpret medical, legal, and counseling terminology related to the specialty.

  • Ability to communicate effectively with clients and family members, discharge planners, community agencies and service providers, psychiatrists, physicians, pharmacies, insurance companies, and other medical professionals, attorneys, Human Services personnel, school personnel, and others verbally and in writing.
